From Key Stakeholders
It is my privilege to introduce East African Breweries PLC’s, EABL’s, fourth Annual Sustainability Report. This year's report focuses on the critical issues of inclusion and diversity, addressing the challenges individuals face across various identities, including gender, age, and physical abilities. While Kenya has made significant strides in equality, as reflected in global indices, the lived experiences of marginalized communities reveal ongoing inequalities exacerbated by climate change and environmental degradation.
I commend EABL’s efforts in fostering inclusion, particularly by supporting women farmers and people with disabilities within their value chain. With 40% of their 60,000 farmers being women and over 1,200 people with disabilities, EABL is making remarkable strides in challenging negative norms and creating environments where all individuals can fully contribute. This report is a reminder that true sustainability hinges on prioritizing the rights and dignity of every person, regardless of background or identity, as we work towards a more equitable and inclusive East Africa.
I am honoured to introduce the work of East African Breweries PLC, EABL, in driving sustainable business practices for the financial year ending June 2024. This report explores the intersection of sustainability, inclusion, and diversity, contributing to a critical conversation across the continent. As Uganda progresses on its development journey, principles of equity, empowerment, and environmental stewardship are key to our continued success. Despite the strides made in gender equality, marginalized communities, and environmental conservation, persistent challenges demand our urgent attention and collective action.
One significant challenge is ensuring equal access to education, employment, and decision-making for all, particularly women, persons with disabilities, youth, and minority groups. Addressing these barriers is crucial for unlocking the full potential of every Ugandan and driving sustainable development. Additionally, Uganda faces environmental challenges that disproportionately affect vulnerable communities, exacerbating inequalities. I commend UBL, as part of EABL, for their contributions and partnerships that foster equal opportunities, encouraging us to remain focused on sustainable development across Uganda and East Africa.
Serengeti Breweries Ltd. (SBL) is a pivotal partner to Tanzania, and I am pleased to introduce East African Breweries PLC’s (EABL) Annual Sustainability Report. This year's focus on inclusion and diversity highlights the importance of Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) in fostering equitable growth. FDIs not only spur economic development but also encourage businesses to adopt global standards of equity, helping create opportunities for marginalized groups, particularly women and girls, who continue to face barriers in areas like technology and workforce participation.
While progress has been made, persistent social norms and discrimination, especially in rural areas, continue to hamper women's empowerment. Women in Tanzania spend significantly more time on unpaid care work and are underrepresented in technology roles, a sector critical to economic advancement. The Tanzanian government has made efforts to address these disparities through loan provisions, law reforms, and promoting women’s economic empowerment. EABL's work in expanding access to STEM for young women is an excellent example of how diversity drives innovation and economic success. As we move forward, we must break down barriers to create a more inclusive, sustainable future for all.
